Killarney Town Councillors vote to rezone Gleneagle lands

7 Mar

Killarney Town Councillors have voted in favour of rezoning land around the Gleneagle hotel from unformulated to Tourism and associated facilities. Mayor Sheila Casey and Councillor Patrick O Donoghue left the chamber to avoid any possible conflict of interest. The Standards in Public Office Commission is to investigate alleged breaches of the Ethics Act by Mayor Sheila Casey and Councillor Patrick O Donoghue in relation to this particular rezoning. A public hearing is to take place in Dublin later this month.

The Gleneagle Hotel Complex and associated lands at Poulnamuck is owned Patrick O Donoghue’s family and Mayor Casey is an employee of the Gleneagle group. Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the rezoning which included a recommendation that a 25 metre strip on land along the river bank be retained for amenities. Town Manager Tom Curran says the development is inkeeping with the Tourism nature of the area.
