Jessie Buckley in A Little Night Music

20 Feb

Jessie Buckley will be performing in A Little Night Music in the Menier Chocolate Factory until the 8th March.

A sophisticated musical in waltz time, Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music returns to the London stage this winter at the Chocolate Factory.

Based on Ingmar Bergman’s film “Smiles of a Summer Night”, A Little Night Music is set in turn-of-the-century Sweden where affairs of the heart are uppermost in everyone’s thoughts. Hailed as a stylish celebration of romantic love and a fairy tale for adults, this production directed by Trevor Nunn – his debut Sondheim show – promises to continue in the Chocolate Factory’s history of acclaimed musicals.

But the bad news, is that if you havent already gotten your hands on a ticket, you wont be able to now as the show is completely sold out, but in The Chocolate Factory only.  The Chocolate Factory is delighted to announce that following a hugely successful sold-out run, our production of A Little Night Music will transfer to the Garrick theatre from March 28th for a strictly limited season

Jessie Buckley update

18 Jul

Following on from the many emails and comments about Jessie Buckley and Nancy/Oliver, here is an article from the Irish Examiner:

The gifted Killarney teenager Jessie Buckley has no immediate plans to tread the boards in London’s West End. Rumours persist the 18-year-old Kerry girl has been offered an understudy role of Nancy in a production of the musical, Oliver, due to start in December. She won the hearts of millions of TV viewers in Britain when she finished second in the BBC’s I’d do Anything talent search series. The prized role of Nancy was landed by Jessie’s main rival Jodie Prenger, 28.

But Jessie’s mother Marina Cassidy said yesterday the teenager has not signed up for the understudy role. No decision had been taken on anything — yet, she said. “She has started a Shakespearean course in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and has also got a very good agent in London. Everything else is still in the pipeline,” said Ms Cassidy, a well-known harpist and soprano.

“At the moment, negotiations are also still going on about other things. She’s very keen about her future training and is really concentrating on that.” But, judging by the reaction of the British public to her TV performances and the acclamation she received from leading West End figures such as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh, it won’t come as a surprise if a role is found for Jessie in Oliver. Managing director of Cameron Mackintosh Ltd Nick Allot was quoted as saying the company was hopeful of getting Jessie to take the understudy role. “We obviously think she’s fantastic. Cameron’s enthusiasm for her talent was obvious for all to see,” he said.

Jodie Prenger, meanwhile, is contracted to play the role of Nancy in six shows per week — with another artist filling in for the other two performances. Mr Allot felt an understudy role would help develop the talents of the Killarney singer who now envisages a career in musical theatre. “It’s very important she’s nurtured because she has an extraordinary talent. The temptation is sometimes to thrust people too quickly into the limelight without properly bringing it [talent] forward,” he remarked.

Jessie Buckley offered Nancy understudy role in West End

15 Jul

Killarney singer Jessie Buckley has been offered the part of under-study for ‘Nancy’ in the forthcoming Cameron Mackintosh production of ‘Oliver!’ Jessie, who shot to fame in the popular BBC television series ‘I’d do Anything’, was the runner-up in the quest to find a suitable actress to play the part of ‘Nancy’. Since the live final of the show, which was watched by an estimated 20 million viewers, Jessie has signed up with an agent in London, and has received numerous offers of work.

Rehearsals for ‘Oliver’ begin in the autumn and the show opens in the West End in December.

The Killarney teenager, who will sing live on the show tonight made the final of the BBC talent series last week. Jessie will be appearing on the show with Tánaiste Mary Coughlan and Red Hurley.
