Kerry TD claims €40,000 expenses – and takes the train

5 May

Photographs of South Kerry TD Jackie Healy-Rae arriving in Dublin by train for Dail business have appeared in the Sunday Mirror. But the paper reports that the independent deputy claimed travel and accommodation expenses of more than €40,000 over the course of a year. Deputy Healy-Rae insists he he only claims what he is entitled to and he varies the mode of transport which he takes to Dublin.

He added that he does not avail of free travel on the train as an OAP – despite being entitled to it – and pays the €72 train fare instead.

Does he think that it is a good thing that he pays for the train and then claims back the money as expenses? He (and all politicians) should be denied the expenses for products/services that he is entitled to receive for free.
