Quality Hotel Killarney to close with the loss of 50 jobs

17 Jan

The Quality Hotel in Killarney is to close this Sunday with the loss of 50 jobs. The former Ryan Hotel on the Cork Road was one of Killarneys best known tourism establishments. The company say the decision to cease operations was due to ongoing trading and financial difficulties

A core full time workforce of 20 to 30 people work at the Quality Hotel, but another 20 people work there on a part time or seasonal basis. Some people had been working in the hotel building for 30 years.

For the past 5 years Caravanna Properties, trading as the Quality Hotel had the lease to run the hotel business. A meeting of creditors will now take place on January 30th and a liquidator will be appointed. SIPTU, which represents hotel workers says it hopes the company Helfon, which owns the actual hotel building, may find a new operator to take over the lease and run the hotel. The unions Donal Tobin says he’s hopeful that a new operator can be found, and that the hotel may open in the summer.

It’s a great shame it’s closing, my family enjoyed many holidays at Kilarney Ryan. I’m sorry there seems to be a contraction in ths industry.
