Castleisland bypass becomes Budget Day casualty

The Castleisland Bypass has become a casualty of Budget 2009. In a briefing Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said plans for the five and a half kilometre single carriageway have been shelved until at least twenty ten. The twenty seven million euro project had recently gone out to tender. In April 2007, representatives of the Castleisland Bypass Group were given Government assurances that whoever was in power following the general election, the funding would remain in place. Cormac O’Mahony says this turnaround is bad news for the people of Kerry. Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said he would bring up the issue of the Castleisland Bypass with his colleague Noel Dempsey
