Kerry hit by flooding

13 Aug

The Earl of Desmond hotel and Ballyseedy Garden Centre were the cause of a traffic hold up this morning. Yes sounds weird but both were flooded and this spectacular site was the source of awe of passing motorists as the slowed down to have a look. Both sides of the main road were flooded.

Also the Farranfore to Castleisland road was closed due to flooding and there are bus transfers operating between Tralee and Killarney as the railway line is also closed due to flooding. The Annascaul to Lispole road is flooded at Menard Castle and according to AA Roadwatch, the road is passable but with extreme caution. There are also reports of flooding and debris on the mountain road from Abbeyfeale to Tralee via Knocknagoshel and motorists are being asked to avoid the road if possible. The Killarney to Gneevguilla road is also closed until further notice due to the river bursting its banks.

As motorists drove in from Killarney the very first evidence of the flooding reported, apart from the endless showers of rain falling from the heavens, was of the Earl of Desmond hotel carpark swimming in water and what looked like a river flowing over the enterance. It was definately something of a sight, I’ve never seen the like of. Thank goodness for the road being higher otherwise there would have been a river joining the Garden centre to the Earl of Desmond flowing over the main road.
