Tesco take plans for Castleisland store to An Bord Pleanala

28 Mar

Tesco is challenging the decision of Kerry County Councillors not to allow them rezone lands at Castleisland, which would have allowed them open a store in the town.
The supermarket giant received the backing from Kerry County Council’s planning department however the case failed to pass a material contravention.
This application is for a supermarket of 2,480 square metres and parking for 193 cars.
In February, Kerry County Councillors were asked to vote on a material contravention to the development plan which is the mechanism required to change zoning of lands.
A total of 20 of the 27 councillors needed to vote in favour of the rezoning, in order for the motion be to passed.
However 11 councillors voted against the proposal.
Kerry County Council had signalled its intent to grant planning permission to Tesco prior to the vote.
Tesco Ireland said it would create 100 jobs for the town.
A number of objections had been lodged by residents and the Garvey Retail Group.
Tesco has taken this case to An Bord Pleanala which will decide whether or not the vote taken by councillors will stand.
