Tesco plan further expansion in Kerry

17 Feb

Tesco is looking to expand further in Kerry. The retail giant is understood to have bought a plot of land in Castleisland opposite the local GAA grounds on the Limerick road. Similar to Listowel, the only major competitor to Tesco in Castleisland is the Garvey supermarket chain. The land in Castleisland, which is situated opposite the GAA grounds on the Limerick road, is currently zoned residential. A material contravention is needed in order to change the zoning of the land, which involves a three quarters majority vote by County Councillors.

In Kerry, 20 of the 27 Councillor s would have to vote in favour of the rezoning from residential to commercial. That vote is scheduled to take place at next Monday s council meeting. Meanwhile in Listowel, Tesco is awaiting the outcome of a decision from An Bord Pleanala, following objections from the Garvey group and RGDATA, which represents independent retailers.

THE war between supermarket giants Tesco Ireland and the Kerry-owned Garvey group is set to continue as both retailers face-off over a development in Castleisland.

On Monday Kerry county councillors effectively voted against Tesco developing a new store in Castleisland, despite one local councillor and the supermarket giant claiming that the development had widespread local support.

Why do we need a Tesco in town. I think the current Garvey’s is
fantastic and a model supermarket. The bakery is fantastic and they
consistently have the cheapest petrol in Ireland. Their grocery prices are
very competitive too. Don’t think we need it and Garvey’s have
supplied us all these years, where was Tesco?
